A method of dismantling an irradiated nuclear fuel assembly
Description
A nuclear fuel assembly from a pressurised water-cooled nuclear reactor comprises a Zircalloy wrapper and a bundle of nuclear fuel pins held by metal grids. To dismantle the fuel assembly after irradiation, a major portion of that part of the wrapper that extends beyond each end of the bundle is removed to leave short wrapper stubs of an intermediate wrapper portion. A respective end cap is inserted in each stub and secured thereto by welding or by a mechanical deformation technique. (Author)
