Use of distillation for the regeneration of solvent used in nuclear fuel reprocessing
Description
The purpose of this study was to carry out a bibliographical approach to a particular stage of the nuclear fuel reprocessing process: the treatment of organic effluents. The role of this step is, from the distillation of the solvent phase, to realize: - the separation of the diluent (TPH), used for washing the aqueous phases of the extracted effluents, - the elimination of the degradation products of the short-chain solvent that lower its flash point, as well as the 'heavy' compounds partly responsible for the aging of the solvent. Combined with a chemical treatment of the solvent, it allows the solvent to find back most of its properties for its use in liquid-liquid extraction cycles. More generally, this study aimed to show the problems encountered in a 'classic' chemical process, such as distillation, applied to a particularly restrictive industry, the 'nuclear' industry, i.e.: - first, the need to design a facility requiring as little maintenance as possible, - in a second time, the difficulty in mastering the physical-chemical phenomena whose knowledge is paramount for the design of the installations and the modeling of the process. Abstract (French)
L'objet de la presente etude etait d'effectuer une approche bibliographique d'une etape particuliere du procede de retraitement du combustible nucleaire: le traitement des effluents organiques. Le role de cette etape est, a partir de la distillation de la phase solvant, de realiser: - la separation du diluant, le TPH, utilise pour le lavage des phases aqueuses d'extraction effluentes, - l'elimination des produits de degradation du solvant a chaine courte qui abaissent le point eclair du solvant, ainsi que les composes 'lourds' responsables en partie du vieillissement du solvant. Associe a un traitement chimique du solvant, il permet a ce dernier de retrouver l'essentiel des ses proprietes necessaires a son utilisation dans les cycles d'extraction liquide-liquide. Plus generalement, cette etude a voulu montrer les problemes rencontres dans une operation 'classique' de genie chimique, telle que la distillation, appliquee a une industrie particulierement contraignante, l'industrie 'nucleaire', soit: - dans un premier temps, la necessite de concevoir une installation exigeant le moins de maintenance possible, - dans un deuxieme temps, la difficulte a maitriser les phenomenes physico-chimiques dont la connaissance est primordiale pour la conception des installations et la modelisation du procede.
