Gamma spectrometry at OSIRIS. Determination of the power and combustion rate of irradiated fuel elements
Description
An original gamma spectrometer is available at Saclay near the core of the Osiris reactor. With such a device, it is possible to investigate nuclear fuel elements irradiated at Osiris or originating from power reactors. It is quite possible to build devices based on this principle in nuclear power reactors, more particularly in water reactors. With such a device, it is possible to follow the evolution in space and with time of a large number of fission products, and from there to draw precious conclusions relative to reactor safety (e.g. failed element detection) and to fuel economy (i.e. determination of combustion rate). The general characteristics of the device are given as well as its applications: determination of the mass combustion and of the linear power of an irradiated element. A non-destructive, versatile and fast means of investigation is therefore given by the installation of gamma spectroscopy inside a reactor

On dispose, a Saclay, d'une installation originale de spectrometrie gamma, situee tout a cote du coeur du reacteur Osiris. Ce dispositif permet d'examiner des elements combustibles nucleaires irradies a Osiris ou provenant de reacteurs de puissance. Il est parfaitement possible d'equiper les centrales de puissance, et notamment les reacteurs a eau, d'installations concues sur ce principe. Un tel dispositif permet de suivre l'evolution dans l'espace et le temps d'un grand nombre de produits de fission, et a partir de la, de tirer des enseignements precieux concernant la securite des reacteurs (mise en evidence d'une rupture de gaine par exemple) et l'economie du combustible (determination du taux de combustion, en particulier). On donne, ici, les caracteristiques principales de cette installation ainsi qu'une de ses applications: la determination de la combustion massique et de la puissance lineaire d'un element irradie. Avec cette installation de spectrometrie gamma en pile, on dispose donc d'une technique d'investigation non destructive, d'emploi souple et rapideFiles
