Studies of iodine absorptive function and topography of the thyroid using sodium iodide labeled with short-lived 123I

Description

A comparative study of the diagnostic potentialities of 123I and 131I was made. The iodine absorptive fuction of the thyroid and its topography were studied in 206 patients by means of scintigraphy and scanning. Owing to a shorter half-life and the absence of β-particles in the spectrum of radiation, 123I is more valuable in terms of diagnosis. A formula for calculation of 123I activity amount in the scanning and scintigraphy of the thyroid is proposed
