Germany: three untruths about phasing out nuclear

Description

Illustrated by several tables, graphs and diagrams, this article is based on the use of the Eurostat database, and presents and comments the evolution of energy consumption and of electric power production in Germany between 1990 and 2018, with a particular attention to the 2000-2018 period in order to examine the actual impact of the phasing out nuclear policy on coal-based electric power production, on CO2 emissions related to electricity production, and on imports of nuclear power from France. After having precisely defined the different steps between raw electric power production and final consumption, defined the intermediate aspects (self-consumption, transport and distribution losses, etc.), distinguished the different electric power exchanges (imports, exports, notably between France and Germany), commented the evolution of the final consumption per inhabitant, the author describes the evolution of power production per source. It appears that the renewable electric power production is largely higher than the decrease of nuclear production, and even higher than the sum of coal-based, lignite-based and uranium-based electricity productions, and that greenhouse gas emissions have decreased
