Description
The North Atlantic Monitoring Program (NOAMP) provided a comprehensive oceanographic data set for studies of flow and dispersion in the deep layers of the ocean. The multidisciplinary program contained both field and modelling components that were truly interrelated, at times. Predictions of evolving eddy flow fields were performed aboard the R/V Meteor by means of shipboard computing equipment. These nowcasts were used immediately to help design special instantaneous surveys in order to investigate eddy fields. NOAMP included a dynamical verification/validation experiment for regional-scale models, and provided insight into site-characterization requirements, as well as monitoring designs. The main goal of NOAMP was to describe regional water transports at depth. Of special interest were the pathways and dispersion of suspended matter in the deep ocean within the near-bottom layer and the possible transport from the abyssal layer upward into the ocean interior.
