Description

Batteries of the lead-acid type have been widely used for many years to provide the essential emergency power for electricity generating plant. The product selected for that vital task has traditionally been the Plante type of cell - a long life product of proven reliability. At Sizewell B, the positive benefits of the newer valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) cells have been recognized and utilized. All the batteries on the Sizewell B site are of the valve regulated type. This paper briefly compares the characteristics of the two cell types, from the user viewpoint, highlighting key features influencing the selection of VRLA for Sizewell. (Author)
