Description

The crystal and magnetic structures of (Y2Sr) (FeCu)O6.5(n=2), I, and (La1/4Sr3/4)4Fe3O9±δ (n=3), II, were investigated by single crystal x-ray diffraction, Moessbauer spectroscopy and neutron diffraction. In I Cu/Fe occupy the same crystallographic site and are coordinated to 5 oxygen ions at the apices of a pyramid. The pyramids share the apical oxygen ion to form two-dimensional layers of double pyramids perpendicular to the c-axis. The Moessbauer parameters are consistent with high-spin Fe3+ in 5-fold coordination. The Neel temperature is 265 K. Neutron powder diffraction patterns at 5 K show weak magnetic lines. In II Fe is in dimensional layer perpendicular to it. The central Fe octahedron has 1/2 of the equatorial oxygen ions missing. Oxygen intercalation and disintercalation occurs over the composition range 8.8-9.25. The Moessbauer results and details of oxygen transport are discussed
