Integrity, behavior and proposal of CARA fuel irradiation with empty negative coefficient

Description

The main issues of the CARA fuel, CVN version, are its negative void reactivity coefficient and an extraction burnup of ∼20000 MWd/ton U. The analysis of the fuel rod behaviour, under the irradiation conditions of the Embalse, Atucha I and II NPPs, are the key to recognize their demanding under operation, to review the classic issues of the PHWR fuels and to prepare a programme of experimental irradiations in order to demonstrate the CARA concept, to assess the fuel integrity, to improve the performance and the enhancement of the safety margins. Abstract (Spanish)

Las principales caracteristicas del combustible CARA, version CVN, son su coeficiente de vacio negativo y un quemado de extraccion de ∼20000 MWd/tonU. Es de particular interes el analisis de su comportamiento bajo las condiciones de irradiacion que puede alcanzar en las CN Atucha I y Embalse y, eventualmente, en la CN Atucha II, con el objeto de prever las exigencias a que sera sometido, revisar aspectos clasicos de los combustibles PHWR y preparar un programa de irradiacion para la demostracion del concepto CARA que aseguraren su integridad durante la operacion, mejoren el rendimiento del combustible y los aspectos de seguridad.
