Nitridation of titanium and zirconium powders mixed with ammonium chloride under high temperature-high pressure ammonia
Description
Nitridation of Ti and Zr metal powders mixed with or without NH4Cl under high temperature and high-pressure ammonia was investigated. Without NH4Cl, only hydrides of Ti or Zr appeared under experimental conditions; with NH4Cl, TiN and ZrN appeared above 5000 and 6000C, respectively, even under 0.1 MPa NH3. Crystallite sizes for TiN and ZrN were 8 to 9 nm and 12 nm by X ray. Lattice parameters of TiN were 0.4232 to 0.4236 nm (corresponding to N/Ti = 0.80 to 1.05), and of ZrN were 0.4559 to 0.4566 (corresponding to N/Zr = 1.25 to 1.30)
