Proton MR phantom studies with a combined imaging and spectroscopy system

Description
Proton chemical shift images of human forearms were obtained using a 310-mm bore, 1.89-T Biospec unit. Separate water and fat images were clearly resolved. Phantoms were used to determine the instrument's performance. A staircase-shaped phantom (1-mm-high steps) was used to establish section selection. A staircase with steps of increasing height (0.1-1 mm) demonstrated spatial resolution to be 0.2mm. A 1D proton chemical shift phantom showed well-separated peaks of oil and water. FeCl/sub 3/ broadened the water peak and reduced its brightness, because of T2 shortening. Brightness also decreased with increasing spin-echo time
