Biomass (or the biologically renewable organic matter produced by the photosynthesis of plants) constitutes a world-wide energy potential of about 1.7 x 1011 dry tonnes/yr and can be converted to useful energy by two methods: (1) biogas production and (2) alcohol production by means of fermentation.
