Food irradiation standard

Description

The Australia New Zealand Food Authority has prepared a consultative document on a standard for treatment of food with radiation. Currently in New Zealand the Food Regulations 1984 permit irradiation of food with the permission of the Minister. However, in 1989 the government established a working party to produce a policy position on irradiation of food, and this resulted in a proposal to ban all food irradiation in New Zealand. Irradiated foods sold in New Zealand have been spices and paprika. (author)
