Simple chemical reaction in numerically simulated homogeneous turbulence

  • 1. Iowa State Univ. of Science and Technology, Ames

Description

A two-species second-order irreversible isothermal reaction in homogeneous turbulence was numerically simulated. The conservation equations for momentum and concentration of reactants were integrated simultaneously over time. Results from the numerical simulation were used to test the closure models of Toor (1969) and Patterson (1981). Toor's model, if limited to reactants in stoichiometric proportions and equal molecular diffusivities, was able to predict the behavior of the mean concentration of reactants reasonably well. On the other hand, the more general model of Patterson was not able to predict the mean or variance of reactant concentrations. 6 references
