Description
This chapter applies the general equations for the effective wave propagation problem, within the independent scatterer approximation, to untextured, spherically-grained materials. The basic equations of the independent scatterer approximation are summarized and a novel approximation to treat the scattering of an elastic wave from an elastically anisotropic spherical grain embedded in an isotropic material is discussed. Calculations calibrating the approximation are presented. Theoretical predictions are made for the effective group velocity, phase velocity, and attenuation for several polycrystals
