On the iron abundance in clusters of galaxies

Description
Implications of the observation of the X ray iron line coming from the intergalactic gas within the three clusters Virgo, Coma and Perseus are discussed. The large mass of iron (>= 1011 M(sun)) within these clusters that is derived from the observations would seem larger than that which can be produced by galaxies; even if one invokes a hot wind driven by massive objects explosions at the early time of galactic evolution which is the most powerful mechanism to enrich the intergalactic medium. Some possibilities to account for this difficulty are discussed, the most attractive are a first generation of massive objects and/or massive halos surrounding galaxies. (orig./WL)

Folgerungen aus der Beobachtung der Eisen-Roentgenlinie im interstellaren Gas in den drei Clustern Virgo, Coma und Perseus werden diskutiert. Die grosse Eisenmasse (>= 1011 M(Sonne)) innerhalb dieser Cluster, die sich aus den Beobachtungen ableiten laesst, scheint ueber der Menge zu liegen, die von den Galaxien produziert werden kann, auch unter der Annahme eines heissen Windes, wie er durch die Explosion massiver Objekte in fruehen Zeiten der galaxischen Entwicklung entstehen kann. Solche Winde stellen den staerksten Mechanismus zur Anreicherung des interstellaren Medium dar. Einige Moeglichkeiten, diesen Schwierigkeiten zu begegnen, werden diskutiert. Die attraktivste Erklaerung ist die Bildung von massiven Objekten und/oder massiven Halos in der Umgebung der Galaxien. (orig./WL)Additional details
