Nuclear Power Beyond The year 2000

Description

Being from an international organization, I would conclude by stressing the importance of wide international co-operation which could facilitate the realization of our, I believe, common goal- the development of safe, reliable, ecologically benign and economically viable nuclear power. Nuclear Power showed continued growth in 1989 in meeting the world's increasing demand for electricity. Total worldwide electric generating capacity of nuclear plants grew by about 8 GW. The world's electrical power ratings are listed in Table 1. In 1989, twelve new nuclear power reactors were commissioned, bringing the world's total number of operating nuclear electricity plants to 439. As of the end of 1989, 27 countries now have nuclear power plants for electricity generation. Countries that brought new nuclear power reactors on line in 1989 were the German Democratic Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, the United Kingdom, the United States, ABM the USSR. Further, in 1989, construction was started on five reactors, in Japan, in the Republic of Korea, and in the USSR. Nuclear power supplied 17% of world electricity. In order that these beliefs become realities, a number of important steps, partially outlined in the paper would have to be implemented at national and international levels
