Description

A 26-year-old female patient died of a left middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion due to fibrinoid thrombosis associated with fatal massive oedema. She had been taking oral contraceptives for several years. Computed tomography (CT), performed one day after the clinical onset, showed infarction of the left MCA territory and linear high density within the main trunk of MCA on plain CT. This was confirmed at autopsy as the result of recent thrombosis. On a contrast-enhanced CT scan some branches of the MCA within the infarcted area were clearly enhanced. The relationship of these enhanced vessels to the occurrence of massive fatal oedema is briefly discussed. 14 refs.; 3 figs
