Interpretation of real material 2D MCCI experiments in homogeneous oxidic pool with the ASTEC/MEDICIS code

Description

2D Molten Core Concrete Interaction (MCCI) experiments involving a homogeneous corium pool configuration have been carried out recently at Argonne National Laboratory in the frame of the OECD/NEA-MCCI cooperative project, and at CEA Cadarache in the frame of CEA-EDF-IRSN VULCANO programs. The aim of this work is to present the interpretation of these outstanding real material 2D MCI tests. This interpretation has been performed with the help of the MEDICIS MCCI module of ASTEC code. Our present interpretation assumes no thermodynamic equilibrium at the pool/crust interface to explain trends observed in these 2D MCCI tests. It is shown that the mechanisms of the 2D concrete ablation during MCCI are mainly related to the pool/concrete interface behaviour versus the interface tilting angle, itself depending on the concrete type (siliceous concrete versus limestone-sand concrete).
