Preparation of lanthanum, neodymium and samarium oxides by thermal decomposition of oxalate salts

  • 1. Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares (IPEN), Sao Paulo, SP (Brazil)

Description

The results of an evaluation of some physical characteristics of lanthanum, neodymium and samarium oxides obtained by drying and calcination of oxalates were reported. The influence of temperature and time of calcination has also been investigated. The thermal decomposition of the oxalates has been examined using thermogravimetric analysis. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, determination of granulometric distribution and carbon contents analysis. It has been found that the effect of the conditions of calcination in the product's characteristics is greater for compounds of lanthanum, since the particles could be disintegrated during this treatment. This effect is smaller for neodymium and samarium compounds. (author). 3 refs, 4 figs, 1 tab
