Combined effects of microwave and ionizing radiation on mouse

Description

Objective: To explore the radioproctective effect of microwave on injury induced by γ-ray. Methods: Male and female Kunming mice were divided into 3 groups, including the 1st group (microwave + radiation), the 2nd group (radiation + microwave), the 3rd group(radiation). The animals in 1st group exposed to microwave (f: 900 MHz, flux density: 150 μW/cm2) for 12 d( 1 hour a day), then animals in the total 3 groups were irradiated once with 10 Gy γ-rays, after that in the 2nd group were exposed to microwave(f: 900 MHz, flux density: 150 μW/cm2), 1 h/d, until the death of animals. The difference in WBC; body weight; survival rates were observed in different groups. Re- suits: It was found that in the 3rd group, WBCs decreased after radiation. Compared with group 3, WBC and the 5-day survival rate in the 1st group were higher, but weight was rather unchanged. Blood cells in the 2nd group were higher than those in the only radiation group, but there is no significant difference between group 2 and group 3 for body weight and 5-day survival rate. Conclusion: Microwave before and after ionising radiation might have protective effect on radiation-induced animal injury. (authors)
