Experimental investigations in particle physics at intermediate energies: Progress report, December 1, 1986 to November 30, 1987
Description
The neutrino experiment at LAMPF (No. 764) has been completed with reports in preparation; the nu/sub μ/C scattering cross section agreed with the Fermi Gas model, and no evidence was seen for nu/sub μ/ → nu/sub e/ oscillations. The LAMPF Crystal Box work is almost complete, with publications on rare pion and muon decays. New limits have been set for a wide variety of decay modes: π0 → 3γ < 3.1 x 10-8, π0 → 4γ < 2 x 10-8, μ+ → e+γγ < 7.2 x 10-11, μ+ → e+γ familon < 1.3 x 10-8. In addition, the sign of the ratio of axial vector to vector in π+ → e+ nuγ was determined to be positive. A new computing facility based on UNIX has been in operation. The rare Kaon decay (lepton-non-conserving and CP-violating decays) experiment at Brookhaven received beam in February and May 1987; we expect to extract an upper limit of a few times 10-9 for the decay K/sub L/ → μe from this first run
