Magnetic compensation temperatures of amorphous rare earth-cobalt alloys

  • 1. Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven, Netherlands

Description

The dependence on composition of the compensation temperature (Tsub(comp)) of various amorphous alloys of Co and rare earths (R=Gd, Tb, Ho, Er) has been systematically investigated, and the results have been analyzed in terms of a molecular field model. Compared with estimates for Tsub(comp) based on free rare-earth ion moments the observed values of Tsub(comp) for R not = to Gd are much too low. This points to a reduction of the R sublattice magnetization on account of local crystal field effects. (Auth.)
