Description
The High Temperature Test Reactor (HTTR) is under construction at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) and coated particle fuel is planned to be loaded in this reactor. In order to realize the HTTR with high safety, it is important to produce the fuel of a high quality. The problems and measures in the research and development of the coated particle fuel are presented, which include the improvement of the pearl-like property of the coated particles, improvement of the coating deposition process, improvement of quality and performance of the coated particle fuel, high burnup, high temperature resistance and the use of thorium. The features and future prospects of coated particle fuel are described. (T.H.)
