Design, development and performance of advanced fuels in Indian PHWRs
Description
Presently, India has 20 Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) in operation with a total installed capacity of 4780 MWe. This capacity is essentially 220 MWe PHWR units with two PHWRs of 540 MWe capacity and two BWR reactors of General Electric make. We are also executing a project of 2x1000 MWe Russian VVER reactors with technical support from Russia. In addition four more PHWR reactors of 700 MWe are under construction. It is a big advantage that the reactor core design is identical to the latest 540 MWe reactors. The completion of the 700 MWe units has been scheduled to match with the fuel resource generation. A few fast breeder reactors, using indigenously processed U-Pu mixed oxide fuel and Advanced HWRs based on ThO2 use are also expected to be in operation
