Decontamination problems during decommissioning of the A-1 nuclear power plant

  • 1. Vyskumny Ustav Jadrovych Elektrarni, Trnava (Czechoslovakia)

Description

The results are presented of phase analysis of contaminated layers of steel surfaces from both the primary and secondary circuit of the A-1 nuclear power plant together with the results of research in chemical and electrochemical decontamination. The main corrosion product is magnetite with various degrees of non-stoichiometry. For decontamination during decommissioning of the A-1 plant, the use of the solution HCOOH+HCOONa+EDTANa2+thiourea with simultaneous ultrasonic treatment was found very effective, as was electrochemical cathodic reduction in phosphoric acid (up to 20% vol). The schedule for decommissioning work, the corrosion effects of decontamination solutions, liquid radioactive waste management and other problems are discussed in relation to decontamination during decommissioning.
