Alfven ion-cyclotron instability: simulation theory and techniques

Description

A particle-ion, fluid-electron computer simulation code is described for the study of the Alfven ion-cyclotron instability. The code, TRACY, is a one-dimensional, spatially periodic code using a spatial grid along one spatial coordinate and all three velocity components of particle ions moving self-consistently in the transverse electric and magnetic fields. Electrons are treated as a linear E x B fluid. 32 refs., 12 figs
