Redox reactions of platinum elements. VI. Catalysis by Ru ions of the reaction between hydrazine and HNO3

Description

Hydrazine is widely used in extractive reprocessing of irradiated nuclear fuel as a reductant and as a reagent that rapidly removes HNO2 from HNO3 solution and stabilizes U(IV), Fe (II), and Ru(III). The rate of hydrazine oxidation by HNO3 in the presence of Ru ions obeys the law -d[N2H5+]/dt = k[N2H5+][H+][Ru], where k = (0.831 ± 0.052) liter2 (mole2·min) at 70 degrees C and ionic strength μ = 3. The activation energy of the reaction is E = (81.9 ± 1.7) kJ/mole. The entropy of activation δS = -(62 ± 5) J/(mole·K). The catalysis mechanism includes a slow step of Ru(III) reduction to Ru(II) by hydrazine and a fast oxidation of Ru(II) to Ru(III) by HNO3
