Radioisotopes and Radiopharmaceuticals in Thyroidology

Description

Several radioisotopes are applied in thyroidology for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Technetium-99m is the main diagnostic and 131I therapeutic radioisotope. They are produced either in nuclear reactors or accelerators (cyclotrons). In the last decade some new radioisotopes are introduced. In the paper the procedures for their routine production as well as the main characteristics, are revealed. Given are some of the most important radiopharmaceuticals together with some of the indications for their in vivo and in vitro use. Several 99mTc- and 131I-radiopharmaceuticals are produced in the Laboratory for Radioisotopes (Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences). (author)
