Westerbork observations of 6-cm H2CO in W3

Description
The distribution of the 4.8-GHz formaldehyde absorption against the continuum sources in the W3 core has been mapped with an angular resolution of 8.2 x 9.3 arcsec2 and a velocity resolution of 1.22 km s-1. Opacity variations on a linear scale size of 0.2 pc are seen against the continuum source W3A. The opacity enhancements are interpreted as being caused by clumping in the molecular material overlying the continuum source. There is a strong correlation between the optical depth of H2CO and that of the silicate absorption at 9.7 μm. Evidence for an interaction between the ionized gas and the surrounding molecular cloud has been found. (author)
