'Liquefied Natural Gas' (LNG) has been thrown into the spotlight. The cost of fossil gas has been rising since 2021 and the horrific invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops has forced governments to grapple with how to end Europe's fossil fuel dependency on Russia. Together with the need to get off fossil fuels as soon as possible in order to mitigate the impacts of climate change and keep global warming to below 1.5 deg. C, these realities have created a buzz around LNG. But what is LNG, and why does it matter? This briefing looks to raise the alarm bell around the roll out of LNG across Europe as an attempt to tackle energy security concerns. It will put forward ten key arguments that showcase the host of problems LNG brings. But first, an explanation of what LNG actually is. LNG simply refers to fossil gas which is transported not through pipelines in a gaseous form, but which is chilled to minus 162 deg. C in order to be liquefied and transported large distances by ships. This means that when we talk about LNG in Europe, we are talking about gas that is extracted, converted into liquid form, shipped across an ocean, converted back into gaseous form, then pumped through the European gas grid to eventually heat and cool homes, and power industry activities. These LNG imports made up 20.5% of Europe's fossil gas consumption in 20211 and with pressure to end imports of Russian gas, governments are looking to LNG from non-Russian sources to meet demand. Yet, we must also be cautious of letting short-term energy supply concerns lock Europe into long-term, costly deals that trap consumers into more dirty fossil fuel infrastructure and energy dependencies in the future. Long-term fossil gas use is incompatible with a safe climate and this needs to be the turning point when Europe moves away from fossil fuels once and for all. This briefing provides counterarguments to the overinflated role that LNG is being positioned to have in Europe's energy future, and shows instead that this is a dangerous distraction from the just energy transition to renewables that is so desperately needed

Le 'gaz naturel liquefie' (GNL) est sous les feux de la rampe. Le cout du gaz fossile augmente depuis 2021, et l'invasion terrible de l'Ukraine par les troupes russes a force les gouvernements a se demander comment mettre fin a la dependance de l'Europe a l'egard des energies fossiles russes. Ces realites ont cree un engouement pour le GNL. Mais qu'est-ce que le GNL et pourquoi est-ce important? Cette note d'information a pour objectif de tirer la sonnette d'alarme autour du deploiement du GNL a travers l'Europe comme une tentative de s'attaquer aux problemes de securite energetique. Elle presente dix arguments cles qui mettent en evidence la multitude de problemes que pose le GNL. Mais d'abord, une explication de ce qu'est reellement le GNL. Le GNL designe simplement le gaz fossile qui n'est pas transporte par gazoduc sous forme gazeuse, mais qui est refroidi a -162 deg. C afin d'etre liquefie et transporte sur de longues distances par navires. Cela signifie que lorsque nous evoquons le GNL en Europe, nous parlons de gaz qui est extrait, converti en forme liquide, expedie a travers l'ocean, reconverti en forme gazeuse, puis pompe a travers le reseau gazier europeen pour finalement chauffer et refroidir les habitations, ou alimenter les activites industrielles. Ces importations de GNL representaient 20,5 % de la consommation de gaz fossile de l'Europe en 20211 et, face aux pressions pour mettre fin aux importations de gaz russe, les gouvernements se tournent vers le GNL provenant de sources non russes pour repondre a la demande. Neanmoins, nous devons egalement faire attention a ne pas laisser les preoccupations d'approvisionnement energetique a court terme enfermer a l'avenir l'Europe dans de nouvelles infrastructures gazieres sales et de nouvelles dependances energetiques. L'utilisation a long terme du gaz fossile est incompatible avec un climat sur, c'est pourquoi l'Europe doit saisir cette opportunite de se liberer une fois pour toutes des combustibles fossiles. Cette note d'information fournit des contre-arguments face au role exagere que le GNL est cense jouer pour l'avenir energetique de l'Europe, et montre au contraire qu'il s'agit d'une distraction dangereuse d'une transition energetique juste vers les energies renouvelables, pourtant desesperement necessaire
