Measures 'in situ' of suspendent sediment concentration. Development of an instrument based on the principle of gamma radiation transmission

Description

The concentration of suspended sediment in water bodies can be determined by an instrument based on the transmission of gamma radiation through matter. The equipment, immerged in the measuring volume, is basically constituted by a source of gamma radiation and a detector kept at a defined distance. The paper presents the physical principles on which the instrument is based and discusses the influence of the radiation energy and of material composition in the measurement's results. It also presents the calibration method and the results obtained during the experiments, that used two sediments of different origin

A concentracao de sedimentos em suspensao em corpos d'agua pode ser determinada por um equipamento baseado na transmissao da radiacao gama atraves da materia. O aparelho, que e imerso no volume a medir, consta basicamente de uma fonte de radiacao gama e de um detector, separados por uma distancia fixa. O trabalho apresenta os principais fisicos nos quais se baseia o instrumento e discute as influencias da energia da radiacao e da composicao do material nos resultados das medidas. Apresenta tambem o metodo de calibracao empregado e os resultados obtidos durante os experimentos, que utilizaram dois sedimentos de origens diferentes
