Widening of the upper mediastinum due to innominate vein thrombosis

Description
Thrombosis of the subclavian and/or innominate veins may cause soft tissue swelling and give a widening of the upper anterior mediastinum. In patients with clinical signs of arm vein thrombosis, this sign indicates central propagation of the thrombus, making arm phlebography unnecessary for diagnostic purposes. (orig.)
