What future for Japanese nuclear power?

In 2017 a survey showed that the Japanese population favourable to nuclear energy stayed around 17% but the same year 50% of the population thought that nuclear energy represented a stable and reliable energy source. The government's energy plan foresees a comeback of nuclear energy up to 20-22 % of the energy mix by 2030, which is a real challenge as only 10 reactors out of 54 have restarted since the Fukushima accident so far. 3 reactors were being constructed when Fukushima accident occurred, their construction works were stopped and have not resumed so far, so it is difficult to consider the construction of new reactors in Japan but Japan is active in research work concerning high-temperature reactors, fast reactors and small modular reactors. It is noteworthy to see that no reactor restarting is possible unless local authorities agree with it. (A.C.)
