Eddy current examination of irradiated fuel pins

  • 1. CEA CEN Cadarache, 13 - Saint-Paul-lez-Durance (France). IRDI

Description

The irradiation of 316 steel-clad fuel pins in fast breeder reactors causes structural variations in the steel and alterations on the clad inner wall due to reactions with the oxide. Eddy current examination reveals these phenomena when they are characterized by modified magnetic permeability and decreased clad wall thickness. Following a description of the test facility and the experimental examination conditions, the paper discusses the methods used to detect these phenomena. 3 refs
