Apparatus for Measuring the Relative Velocities of Ground Waters by the Point Dilution Method

Description

Determination of the relative velocities of ground water provides data on the relative porosity of terrains and is therefore of particular interest in problems concerned with the impermeability of soils. It was with this in mind that the authors undertook the development of an apparatus, described in the paper, to determine the relative velocities of ground water. The apparatus, which is intended for insertion in a piezometer, enables the water of one section of the piezometer to be isolated. By means of a device controlled from the surface a radioactive (gamma-emitting ) tracer can be injected into this section, and an agitator ensures that the solution can be homogenized at any time. The radioactive tracer is scanned by a gamma-radiation detector located at one end of the measurement section. A suitable collimation device prevents this detector from being affected by the tracer located outside the piezometer. The paper discusses the first results obtained with this apparatus. (author)

Abstract (French)

La determination des vitesses relatives des eaux souterraines est un moyen d'acceder a la connaissance des porosites relatives des terrains; elle interesse donc au premier chef les problemes d'etancheite de sols. C'est dans ce cadre que les auteurs ont entrepris la realisation d'un appareil permettant de determiner les vitesses relatives des eaux souterraines, dont ils donnent la description. Cet appareil, destine a etre introduit dans un piezometre, permet d'isoler l'eau d'une section de ce piezometre. Dans la section consideree, un dispositif commande depuis la surface du sol permet de realiser l'injection d'un traceur radioactif emetteur de rayonnement γ. Un systeme d'agitation permet d'homogeneiser a tout instant la solution. Le traceur radioactif est vu pat un detecteur de rayonnement γ, place a l'une des extremites de la section de mesures. Un dispositif de collimation convenable evite a ce detecteur d'etre sensible au traceur situe a l'exterieur du piezometre. Une critique est faite des premiers resultats obtenus avec cet appareil. La determinacion de las velocidades relativas de las aguas subterraneas permite obtener datos sobre la porosidad de los terrenos y reviste, por tanto, un interes primordial para los problemas de estanqueidad de los suelos. Los autores describen un aparato que han construido con miras a determinar las velocidades relativas de las aguas subterraneas. El aparato, que se introduce en un piezometro, permite aislar el agua de une de sus secciones, que contiene un dispositivo, accionado desde la superficie del suelo, con el que se puede inyectar un radioisotope emisor γ. Existe tambien un sistema de agitacion para homogeneizar en todo momento la solucion. El paso del indicador radiactivo es observado mediante un detector de rayos γ situado en uno de los extremos de la seccion de mediciones. Un colimador adecuado impide que el detector registre la actividad procedente del exterior del piezometro. La memoria analiza los primeros resultados obtenidos con este aparato. (author)

Opredelenie otnositel'nykh skorostej techeniya gruntovykh vod predstavlyaet soboj metod poznaniya otnositel'noj kappilyarnoj poristosti grunta i poehtomu predstavlyaet v pervuyu ochered' interes dlya izucheniya vodonepronitsaemosti razlichnykh sloev pochvy. S ehtoj tsel'yu avtorami byla predprinyata razrabotka pribora, pozvolyayushchego opredelyat' otnositel'nye skorosti techeniya gruntovykh vod. Daetsya opisanie takogo pribora. EHtot pribor, kotoryj dolzhen byt' pomeshchen vnutri p'ezometra, pozvolyaet izolirovat' vodu ot odnogo iz otdelenij ehtogo p'ezometra. Ustrojstvo, rabotayushchee po komande s poverkhnosti zemli, pozvolyaet vvodit' v ehto otdelenie radioaktivnyj indikator s gamma-izlucheniem. Sistema peremeshivaniya pozvolyaet v lyuboe vremya gomogenizirovat' rastvor. Radioaktivnyj indikator proslezhivaetsya detektorom gamma-izlucheniya, ustanovlennym na odnom iz kontsov otdeleniya izmerenij. Sootvetstvuyushchee ustrojstvo dlya kollimirovaniya predokhranyaet ehtot detektor ot izlucheniya indikatora, nakhodyashchegosya vne p'ezometra. Daetsya kriticheskij obzor pervykh rezul'tatov, poluchennykh s pomoshch'yu ehtogo pribora. (author)
