Electron accelerators and dosimetry in flue gas treatment

Description

Demonstration scale plants of the electron beam flue gas treatment are already in operation. This paper outlines the current status of R and D in electron beam flue gas treatment in Japan, describes the electron accelerator required as the principal tool, and discusses dosimetry methods required for cost estimation and design of the irradiation systems. It is concluded that the film dosimeter such as blue cellophane film is useful in measuring dose and its distribution for laboratory scale irradiation vessel in fundamental study. Enlargement of the scale in demonstration plant has been performed. Some experiences about dosimetry were described here. Further progress related to electron accelerator design such as enlargement of beam output power, stability in long time continuous operation, low running cost and low prices is important for future practical applications of this technology. It is hoped that this report may contribute to further progress in this field. (S. Ohno)
