Neutron irradiation behavior of different classes of carbons

Description

The electronic properties of various carbons have been studied as a function of irradiation (neutron) dose and annealing. A general interpretation in terms of positive holes (in the valence band) and localized or delocalized paramagnetic centres created by the displacement of carbon atoms due to neutron irradiation is given. Different classes of carbons may be defined and an ''equivalent dose'' is used to characterize each carbon in its class. The irradiation and annealing behavior of graphites and pyrocarbons may also be visualized through their ''paths'' in a Hall effect - magnetic susceptibility two-dimensional space

Abstract (French)

Les proprietes electroniques de divers carbones ont ete etudiees en fonction des doses d'irradiation neutronique et du recuit. Une interpretation generale est donnee en fonction des trous positifs (dans la bande de valence) et des centres paramagnetiques localises ou delocalises crees par deplacement des atomes de carbone sous l'effet de l'irradiation neutronique. Differentes classes de carbones peuvent etre definies et une dose fictive est utilisee pour caracteriser chaque carbone dans sa classe. Le comportement des carbones et des graphites sous irradiation et durant le recuit peut etre represente par une trajectoire dans l'espace a deux dimensions effet-Hall susceptibilite magnetique
