Description

In order to investigate fuel freezing phenomenology in the transition phase of an LMFBR accident, a separate effects experiment was conducted. These tests investigated the melting behavior of an ice pipe due to warm refrigerant (R-11) flow. A thin film heat transfer model shows good agreement with the experimental results. When this thin film model is applied to the transient freezing and melting process in a fuel-steel LMFBR system, the predicted fuel penetration distance is in very good agreement with the experimental results of Spencer and Henry. 27 refs
