Update and finalization of a fibered on-line dosimetry system based on optically stimulated phosphorescent materials Application to dose measurement in radiation therapy and beam monitoring
Description
Wherever radiations are used, for medicine, industrial applications or research, the amount of energy deposited per unit mass (absorbed dose) has to be quantified. The usual Methods used to quantify the dose, that is dosimetry are reviewed. The overall context in both radiation therapy and high energy physics led to the elaboration of a book of specifications for the development of a novel type of on-line dosimetry. It is based on the quantification of the luminescence emitted by an optically stimulated phosphorescent material deported by an optical fiber. Principles and applications relatives to these techniques are presented in chapters 2 and 3. Chapter 4 describes a novel, easy of use, robust and flexible dosimetry system. The first experimental results exhibit an excellent linearity of the response with dose (0.01 to 6 Gy), measurement repeatability less than 2%, a high sensitivity to radiation and an error on dose measurement less than 5%. Preliminary system qualification for dose measurement during both radiation therapy treatments and beam monitoring in high energy physics facilities (CERN and DESY) gave encouraging results since the system meets some of the requirements specific to each kind of application. Thus, the characterization of structural and luminescence properties of the phosphorescent material doped with boron, with aim of application for the on-line dosimetry in mixed radiation field neutron / gamma may explain the drop of luminescence previously observed. Abstract (French)
L'utilisation des rayonnements ionisants, qu'elle soit dans le domaine medical, industriel ou encore de la recherche, requiert la quantification de l'energie deposee par unite de masse: la dose absorbee. Les methodes traditionnelles de dosimetrie sont rappelees. L'ensemble du contexte scientifique dans les domaines de la radiotherapie et de la physique des hautes energies aboutit a l'elaboration d'un cahier des charges pour le developpement d'un nouveau type de dosimetrie en ligne. Celle-ci est basee sur la quantification de la luminescence emise par un materiau phosphorescent stimulable optiquement deporte a l'aide d'une fibre optique. Les principes et applications lies a ces techniques sont exposes au cours des chapitres 2 et 3. Le chapitre 4 decrit un nouveau systeme de dosimetrie a la fois simple d'utilisation, robuste et flexible. Les premiers resultats experimentaux mettent en evidence une excellente linearite de la reponse avec la dose (0,01 a 6 Gy), une variation sur la repetabilite des mesures inferieure a 2%, une sensibilite elevee aux rayonnements ainsi qu'une erreur sur la mesure de dose inferieure a 5%. L'evaluation des potentialites de ce systeme a la fois pour la mesure de dose durant les traitements de radiotherapie et pour le monitorage de faisceaux dans les installations pour la physique des hautes energies (CERN et DESY) a donne des resultats encourageants puisque le systeme remplit certaines exigences specifiques a chaque type d'application. Enfin, la caracterisation des proprietes structurales et de luminescence du materiau phosphorescent dope au bore, en vue d'application pour la dosimetrie en champ mixte neutron / gamma, permet d'expliquer la baisse de luminescence observee precedemment.
