The 'Which French presidency for which Europe?' seminar cycle: the struggle against climate change, a marker of the European identity. Report of the sixth seminar

Three contributions are proposed. The first one comments the various scenarios developed by the International Energy Agency (IEA) for energy sources, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Then, the author expresses some critics about the European energy policy which aims at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energies, and improving energy efficiency. The second contribution comments the European energy policy. It describes some difficulties in setting a common posture, and the directives which aim at correcting some problems encountered with the Emission Trading Scheme. It also evokes the problems related to the 10 per cent objective for biofuels in petrol and gas oil consumption, and those related to renewable energies. It finally discusses how the European approach could be an example for other countries. The third contribution briefly discusses the role of the French presidency of the European Union in the Copenhagen negotiations. Discussions during a following debate are presented
