Dismantling of reactor pressure vessel by arc saw cutting system

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Tokai, Ibaraki (Japan). Tokai Research Establishment

Description

The JPDR decommissioning program was initiated in 1981 as a national program by the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). An arc saw cutting system for remote dismantling of the highly-radioactive reactor pressure vessel (RPV) was developed. The actual RPV cutting using the arc saw cutting system was finished in 1990, well ahead of schedule. There are few examples of such projects as RPV dismantling to be found anywhere in the world, so this is valuable experience in the increasingly important field of nuclear decommissioning technology.
