On sudden period changes in contact binaries

Creators

Description

It is proposed that sudden period jumps in contact binaries can be caused by the action of a third companion in a highly eccentric orbit of small periastron distance. Time jumps as observed are easily reproduced for a wide range in mass of the third body but observations may restrict the possible mass range to less than a few times 0.1 solar masses. (Auth.)
