Iodine release from defect fuel elements in the Halden Boiling Heavy Water Reactor

Description
Iodine release from defect fuel rods in the Halden Reactor has been evaluated in terms of fuels specifications, irradiation conditions, and defect characteristics. The release data reported were obtained during the years 1965-1973. The fuel rods had widely varying design specifications and irradiation histories. Release fractions during constant power operation could be expressed as an exponential function of the average fuel centre temperature. The releases in bursts were normally of the order of 1% except in cases with molten fuel. The aim of the fuel irradiations has not been the study of fission product release. The activity measuring system was designed for routine plant control only
