Radioisotopic study of calcium metabolism in rat during chronic poisoning by cadmium

The radioisotopic study of calcium metabolism during chronic poisoning by cadmium in the rat (8 mg/kg/day) has shown an important decrease of intestinal absorption of calcium after 6 weeks. After 13 weeks, this impairement is associated to a decrease of rapidly and slow exchangeable calcium compartments as well exchange rates. The decrease of osteogenesis is confirmed by an important drop of serum alkaline phosphatases which reflect the decrease of osteoblastic activity. These results suggest that the disorders observed in rat are similar to those elicited in osteoporosis
Abstract (French)
L'etude radioisotopique du metabolisme calcique au cours d'une intoxication chronique par le cadmium chez le rat (8 mg/kg/j) a permis de montrer une diminution importante de l'absorption intestinale du calcium des l'echeance de 6 semaines. A l'echeance de 13 semaines cette perturbation s'accompagne d'une diminution des compartiments calciques rapidement et lentement echangeables ainsi que de leurs vitesses d'echanges. Le ralentissement de l'osteogenese est confirme par une diminution importante du taux des phosphatases alcalines seriques, signant un ralentissement de l'activite osteoblastique. L'ensemble de ces donnees semble apparenter les troubles deceles chez le rat a une osteoporoseAdditional details
