Description
Charged-particle radiography and computerized tomography are being developed for the medical diagnostic imaging of tumors and other abnormalities which result in tissue density differences. Beams of high-energy carbon and neon particles accelerated by the Berkeley Bevalac are being used in conjunction with nuclear track detectors. It has been demonstrated that these methods are feasible and are capable of high resolution. Differences in tissue densities as small as 0.2% have been detected and measured. Comparison between heavy-ion CT images and X-ray CT images are discussed. (author)
