Temporal changes of radionuclide content in the organism of wild boar (Sus scrofa) and elk (Alces alces)

Description

The data for changes of specific activity of radionuclides in organs of wild boar and elk from regions with different density of radionuclide contamination (5-40 Ci/km2) having been received in 1986-1994 are presented. Control groups of animals were from the Berezinskij reserve and from the Grodno, the Vitebsk and the Minsk Regions. It was revealed the decrease of radionuclide specific activity in muscles, lungs and kidneys of wild boars and elks in 1988 in comparison with 1986. Since 1989 to 1992 it was marked increase of radionuclides content in muscles and organs of both species of the animals. The tendency to increase radionuclide accumulation in the animal bodies was revealed from 1992. The results have shown that radionuclide activity was higher in elks than in wild boars in all cases. It correlated with peculiarity of their feed (ground cover in one case and grafts of trees in the another). It was concluded that conducting hunting activity was not expended on the territories with high level of radionuclide contamination and it was preferable to develop hunting farm for tree feeding animals on the territories with relatively low level of radionuclide contamination
