The temperature dependence of the hyperfine interaction of the transition metal osmium in a gadolinium host matrix

Integral perturbed angular correlations of the 931-155 keV γγ-cascade of 188Os in Gd have been measured. With this technique the combined magnetic and electric hyperfine interaction of the 155 keV level of 188Os as an impurity in a Gd host has been studied as a function of temperature. The result for the electric field gradient of Os in Gd at 300 K is: /Vsub(zz)(Os:Gd)/ = (12.8sup(+3.1) sub(-1.9)) x 1017 V/cm2. For the magnetic hyperfine field at 4.2 K the value; Hsub(hf)(Os:Gd) = -134(26)kG; was obtained. Sign and magnitude of the magnetic hyperfine field suggest the existence of a localized moment of about -0.4μsub(B) at the site of Os in Gd. With increasing temperature the magnetic hyperfine field decreases much stronger than the magnetization of the host. Possible explanations for this anomalous temperature dependence are discussed. Die integralen gestoerten Winkelkorrelationen der 931-155 keV γγ-Kaskade von 188Os in Gd wurden gemessen. Mit dieser Methode wurde die kombinierte magnetische und elektrische Hyperfeinwechselwirkung des 155 keV 188Os-Zustands als Verunreinigung in einer Gd-Wirtsmatrix als Funktion der Temperatur untersucht. Das Ergebnis fuer den elektrischen Feldgradienten von Os in Gd bei 300 K ist: /Vsub(zz)(Os:Gd)/ = (12,8sup(+3,1)) sub(-1,9) x 1017 V/cm2. Das magnetische Hyperfeinfeld hat bei 4,2 K den Wert; Hsub(hf)(Os:Gd) = -134(26)kG. Vorzeichen und Groesse des magnetischen Hyperfeinfeldes lassen die Existenz eines lokalisierten Moments von etwa -0,4 μsub(B) am Ort des Os in Gd vermuten. Mit zunehmender Temperatur faellt das magnetische Hyperfeinfeld sehr viel schneller ab als die Magnetisierung des Wirtsgitters. Moegliche Erklaerungen dieser anomalen Temperaturabhaengigkeit werden diskutiert. (orig.)Additional details
