Description

A distributed microprocessor architecture has been developed for the protection and control systems in a Westinghouse pressurized water reactor. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design philosophy and practices used to achieve the goals of plant safety and availability in a way that can properly be verified. Areas discussed include application of redundancy, functional diversity, multiplexing, and structured programming. These topics are addressed in the context of their contribution to safety, availability, and verifiability. 7 refs
