Relaxation time measurement of low energy hydrogen ions confined in mirror magnetic field
Description
Confinement of hydrogen ions in a mirror field was studied as a fundamental step leading to beam confinement fusion. Molecular-hydrogen beams of 15 to 20 keV in energy were injected to confine dissociated hydrogen ions. Number density of hydrogen ions was 7x1010 m-3 in a central region. We measured relaxation time of the confinement by means of neutral-particle detection. The observed relaxation time of about 1 ms is understood in terms of collision with residual hydrogen gas.
